Why we don't plate anything
Plating is cheaper, faster, and looks identical for about seven months. That last part is the problem.
Every gold-coloured bracelet under a certain price is plated. A layer of gold, usually between half a micron and three microns thick, deposited electrically onto a base metal. At three microns it will last a few years. At half a micron it will last a season.
The trouble is that you cannot see the difference on day one. Two bracelets, identical in the photograph, identical in the hand, and one of them will wear through at the clasp by spring.
We decided early that we would rather sell fewer things than sell something with a hidden expiry date. When our gold arrives it will be solid 18k on the same cord, which is why it has taken two years and why it will not be cheap.
Sterling has the same honesty. It tarnishes, and tarnish is reversible. What is not reversible is a worn-through plating layer, because underneath it there is nothing to restore.
The cord is the one part that genuinely wears, and we are equally plain about that: it will soften and eventually need replacing. So we re-string it free, for life, and seat your silver back on the new one.
